Hey ๐, โ โ A subscriber asked, "What do you do when you can't find comps?" Great question, and thank you for asking! You know who you are.
Okay, so you are knee-deep in a Goodwill bin and find an item from a good brand in immaculate condition. Or better yet, you got it for free. You have a hunch that it might do well on Posh, but your quick comp check efforts on Poshmark gave you nothing to work with.
What the hell do you do next?
โ Reseller Forensics ๐ฉ๐ปโ๐ฌ
Hereโs how to tackle this challenge:
Information Gathering ๐ง โ โWork with what you know. โ If you know the brand, color, subcategory (in the case of bag shoulder, crossbody, etc.), and materials, that is enough to dive deeper. Do comp lookups on how the brand's current styles are performing. Canโt find anything on their current styles? Look at similar styles from other brands in the same category or price point. โ Consider the characteristics above as price dials: popular/luxury brand, in-demand style, high quality, good condition, and aged items often justify a higher price. โ
Tap Other Resources ๐ โโ Since a quick comp lookup on Poshmark didnโt yield results, explore other resources.
1. Start with eBay: โ The granddaddy of resale marketplaces. You can find comps for most things on eBay. But but but, if eBay doesnโt have anything, check all the other platforms, such as Facebook MP, Mercari, and Depop.
2. Online Forums: โ Believe it or not, there are die-hard fan groups for almost every brand, even those you thought were 6 ft. under and haven't heard about in decades. Look for dedicated Facebook groups or Reddit subreddits. These communities are filled with members happy to help and will even gush over your find.
3. Vintage Groups:
If none of the above works, and you suspect the item is vintage, dive into vintage-specific forums or FB groups. Post, and usually, someone will chime in. You can also check sites like Etsy to see if you see the same item or something similar.
โ
โ If you still can't find anything ๐ซ
โ If it's a unique style, price high and wait. โ A person who appreciates one-of-a-kind pieces may come along and pay the higher price. At the very least, the offers that come in will give you an idea of what people are willing to pay.
But if youโre struggling to determine the comps while sourcing, Put ๐๐ผ it ๐๐ผ back. Leave the item right where you found it in that bin; it's safer than letting it sit in your closet, taking up space.
โ โ I hope this helps! We love the questions, so keep them coming.
Thanks for reading & Happy Thrifting โ โ
